Child Protection – 4 Levels
The 4-Level Model
Child protection works best when it operates on multiple levels. Together, they form a solid safety net.
Device & Operating System
The first line of defense directly on the device
Network & Provider
Protection at router and internet level
Protection Software
Additional software for extended protection
Platforms & Apps
Settings in individual apps and services
Level 1: Device & Operating System
The built-in features of iOS, Android, Windows and macOS.
- Screen Time
- Content Restrictions
- Family Sharing
- Communication Limits
- Digital Wellbeing
- Family Link
- Restricted Profiles
- Play Store Filter
- Microsoft Family Safety
- Child Account
- Activity Reports
- App Limits

Level 2: Network & Provider
Protection at network level – applies to all devices on the home network.
Swisscom, Sunrise, UPC – all offer built-in filters and schedules.
CleanBrowsing, OpenDNS Family Shield – block inappropriate sites network-wide.
Automatically turn off internet at certain times.
Caution
Network filters don't work when children use mobile data or are at friends' houses. That's why: combine with device settings!
Level 3: Protection Software
Additional software – useful depending on age and situation.
Comprehensive parental control for all platforms. Free basic version.
Monitors social media and messages for problematic content. Alerts parents.
Web filter and screen time management.
GPS tracking, app management, YouTube monitoring.
My Recommendation
For most families, the built-in features (levels 1 + 2) are sufficient. Additional software is useful for younger children or when more control is needed.
Level 4: Platforms & Apps
Every app has its own security settings – use them!
Enable restricted mode. For younger kids: use YouTube Kids.
Accompanied mode, disable direct messages, private account.
Private account, comment filter, activity status off.
Snap Map on "ghost mode", only friends can contact.
Profile picture/status only for contacts, limit group invitations.
Disable chat or limit to friends, block purchases.
Understand all 4 levels?
In my courses, you learn how to configure all levels yourself – router, devices, apps. Once understood, you have control.
